A Safer Night-Out Checklist for Meeting Someone New

Simple prep for a night out: choose a public place, tell a friend, control your transportation, and listen to the signals that say it is time to leave.

Before a first date, a little preparation can make the whole evening feel more relaxed. The goal is not to expect the worst. It is to keep your choices available.

Set up the basics first

Meet in a public, staffed place. Tell a trusted person where you are going and when you expect to check in. Keep your phone charged, arrange your own transportation, and do not leave drinks unattended.

Give yourself permission to leave

You do not owe a second location, an explanation, or a ride home with someone new. If the situation feels uncomfortable, say you are heading out, ask staff for help, call a friend, or request a ride.

Your comfort is enough of a reason. The right person will understand that safety is part of a good date.
